It's been a really tough week, but not nearly as tough for my friends and family who knew the woman, mother, daughter, lover who died from childbirth - who happened to be a proud and passionate homebirther.
Caroline was part of a homebirth community who my friends and family are apart of in Victoria, to me, she is an extended family friend. This is personal, it touches me greatly.

At a time where I am lost for words, I find I have to find them. I have to defend my choices, the choices of others, when people are uneducated and say homebirthers are risky and irresponsible. I think people who chose to birth at home are the ones that are educated more so than others. We know the risks, we also know the risks for going to the hospital with the medical system the way it is!

Today, Homebirth Australia spokeswoman, Michelle Mears' article was posted on the Herald Sun.
It is the words I'm looking for.

MANY parents around Australia today will be feeling sorrow for Caroline Lovell's tragic death and sadness for the family she has left behind.
Her death following her planned home birth was the first incident of a mother dying related to a home birth in Australia in almost 20 years.

The call for a ban on home births in yesterday's Herald Sun because of one maternal death in 20 years is completely illogical. About 20 women died in Australian hospitals in childbirth last year -- should we ban hospital births, too?

In Australia our maternal mortality rate is one of the lowest in the world at 8.4 in every 100,000 women. The latest statistics, from 2003-05, show only 65 maternal deaths occurred in Australia. None of these were related to home births.

Home births have consistently been proved to be safe. Large international studies show there is no increase in deaths of mothers or babies when women birth at home with a midwife.

Many studies show women who have a planned home birth have fewer interventions, including epidurals and inductions, and use of forceps, vacuum extraction or caesarean births. Women who choose a home birth are less likely to suffer from postpartum haemorrhage.

More and more families are choosing to have a home birth in Australia, with a 33 per cent increase between 2004 and 2009. In the US, they've just recorded the highest rate of home births ever, with a 30 per cent rise in home births in the same period.

The choice about where to give birth belongs with a woman and her family. Parents have the right to make decisions about their children -- what they eat, where they go to school and also where they give birth. To suggest that right should be taken away is ridiculous in today's democratic society.
Home birth supporters want women who choose to birth at home to have a safe birth with the assistance of trained professionals.

Women who opt to birth at home choose to do so as they've decided that it's the safest place for their babies and themselves. Women choose a home birth because they want to give birth in the comfort of their home, with a midwife they know and trust. They want their families to be with them and they want to be in control of the experience.
The Herald Sun reported the transfer rates at a home birth are 50 per cent -- the transfer rate for private midwives is actually from 10-20 per cent. The majority of transfers occur before labour or when there is slow progress in the labour.

Getting started - My Office!!

This room has been many things. When we brought the house, it originally was going to be Dave's MAN CAVE. It turned into a store room, a pole room and then the cat took over and it was known as Kritty's room.

When I fell pregnant, the room became my sewing and birth room. It's where I set up my birth pool and where I laboured.

It is now my WOMAN CAVE! My office, my study : )
It still needs work, messy as and I should have waited before posting pics... Dave brought me a solid wooden desk months ago, so one side will be my study desk for Uni this year as well as a desk for my doula stuff, the other side -

Sewing! Room for both my machines : )

Hair growth

I've been on the search for dread photos to see different styles and sizes. I'm SOOO excited about this adventure. I found some amazing photos here: http://fuckyeahperfectdolls.tumblr.com/tagged/dreadlocks but they might not be your thing if you don't like nudity, but RAWWW! Tattoos and dreadlocks! Anyway, I then got wondering how long it would take to grow my hair really long.

And I found this. Long hair might not work living in Darwin, but we'll see. I've previously always had long (blonde) hair. A few months after dating Dave we BOTH got our hair cut. Dave also had long hair. I have photo somewhere, and I'll try and dig it out, of me the day before chopping it off. I'm standing on our balcony topless with my hair covering my boobs. It was so long (for me at least).

In other news, I find out about Uni on Wednesday!

shower cap

My sewing has improved 20 fold from when I first started out. I make stuff for Beth all the time.
Today, in my researching on what "stuff" I'll need for my up and coming dreadlocks, someone suggested a shower cap for keeping them out of the way.
Well, I can do that!
I found some awesome instructions here at SuperMom. It's not water-proof, but water resistant which I think will be fine for what I am after : )

Update 14/01/2012: I tested the water resistance this morning by sticking the shower cap under the tap, and it worked! Now my fabulous cousin in Geelong, who has dreads, wants one :) Off to sew...

D: Destinations, favorite, least favorite and why: Maybe I should answer this when we get back from holidays in a few weeks. But my favourite would definitely be East Timor. Such beauty! Least favourite, Newcastle NSW. What can I say...

E: Event you experienced abroad that made you say “wow”: When I was in East Timor, my Dad who was serving over there at the time, took my Mum and I out for the day. We arrived at this abandon house that was over a river, it turns out the Indonesians who hang East Timorese off the top balcony then cut the rope to have the bodies float down the river.

F: Favorite mode of transportation: I enjoy walking, but also am a fan of trains. I loved the Puffy Billy in Victoria or the steam train in Cairns.

G: Greatest feeling while traveling: New things! Love seeing new things, tasting new things and meeting new people.

H: Hottest place you’ve traveled to: I think Darwin is a pretty hot place, on par with Dili, East Timor.

I: Incredible service you’ve experienced and where: When I was traveling with Bethany by myself to visit my ill Nan in Victoria. I was on a plane with a 12 week old and the flight attendants were awesome. Very helpful, moving me to an empty seat, holding Beth while I got my stuff. Just a really great experience.

J: Journey that took the longest: My Nan took myself and a cousin to Disneyland in California when I was 15. We flew from Melbourne, to Sydney then onto the US.

K: Keepsake from your travels: Photos, photos and more photos! I also collect shot glasses and stubby coolers.

L: Let-down sight, why and where: Bali, the place where the Bali Bombings happen. It wasn't that big or special as I thought it would have been...

M: Moment where you fell in love with travel: I remember going on heaps of camping trips growing up in Queensland. My family and I have driven all around Queensland and much of Australia actually. It's defiantly something I want B to grow up with too :)

N: Nicest hotel you’ve stayed in: Honeymoon in Bali. It was pretty flash but we got it for steal.

O: Obsession—what are you obsessed with taking pictures of while traveling?: Since having Bethany - definitely Bethany!

P: Passport stamps, how many and from where? In my current passport, not so much as I have been travelling mostly within Australia. I think all is in it is Bali... It expires in 2013 - must get a new one!

Q: Quirkiest attraction you’ve visited and where: In Australia, it has to be the BIG things!

R: Recommended sight, event or experience: Just East Timor in general. It's amazing!

S: Splurge; something you have no problem forking over money for while traveling: Don't regret anything - if you want it, go for it!

T: Touristy thing you’ve done: Bali in general, teehehe! Disneyland or my personal favourite - getting my hair braided in Thailand, what was I thinking!

Darwin Traveling Crib

This morning I had a visit with one of my clients, A. A and M are an awesome couple who are going through the birth centre with the homebirth midwives, and we were chatting about various things when I asked for the tour of her house. Just so I know where her loo and shower is etc, she then took me into the spare room where there was this white, swinging crib. A was saying it was the "Darwin Traveling Crib", I was thinking to myself - well, it doesn't look easy to travel with!

It turns out that is crib has been traveling around Darwin since September 1974! So it survived Cyclone Tracy :) It comes with this tiny little notebook with a all the different parents/babies that have used it over the years. I just so happen to open the book and the page I land on is someone I know from the Homebirth Group. I can't believe this exists and I had never heard of it before. It really is an amazing thing if you happen to be lucky enough to have.

In other news, I have decided that I'm going to get dreads when we are in Perth in 10 weeks. I have wanted them for AGES and feel like it is a great time to have them done.

Emotional Eating

I've always known I was an emotional eater. Eating when stressed, or sad or even happy!
Today was a horrible day. Work was toxic... So close to caving in and head for the choccies but instead I went for a walk to Woolies and spoilt myself by having a fancy yogurt. Pretty happy that I was strong enough to say no! I guess my addiction is lessening with each day : )
5 days and no;
Booze
Sugar (unless in fruit)
Caffeine
Soft drinks
And VERY limited dairy, small amount of cheese in my salads is all and very limited bread products. We had bread last night with our potato and leek soup - but normally bread is a daily food in our house.

Hopefully Dave has noticed a difference, pass the headaches of the caffeine withdrawal...

Beth's First Day

Beth has started at Little Possum's Playhouse. She'll only be going 3 days a week but it's a HUGE step!

Luckily, I know one of the carers. Whilst Bub isn't one of Bethany's carers, she pops her head in and sends me updates of her progress.

Not bad. Two days and two sleeps!
I was worried they wouldn't be able to get her down for a nap.

Let's hope 2012 is much better than 2011.
Losing my beloved Nan, who I loved more than most love their grandmothers, having to put to sleep 2 of our family pets that we have had years and since 6 weeks and the return to work from maternity leave. And that was just my life, the natural disasters around the world were heartbreaking!

But there were some ups in 2011, more than the downs. I started attending births as a doula, Bethany turned 1, we travelled and I grew personally.
So it wasn't all bad...

This is day 6 of no day time feeds.
Wed, Thurs and Friday's are always the same as I'm at work. On Saturday we stayed busy and I went to Ella's in the late arvo. Sunday I worked at the CEA so really it has only been today that I had to work at it.
We kept busy, played heaps and went on a MASSIVE walk in the terrible heat so Beth could nap (without boobing). Tomorrow we have plans so I imagine it will be the same.

Wow.
Cannot believe I might be able to wean with no tears. Totally my plan as I know that it is good for me and BETH!

Attended Darwin's first "Baby Expo" today. In true Darwin style it was in a shed with a handful of stalls.

I went with my DHBG CEA and Embrace Birth. Wasn't too bad actually, a few people were interested in DHBG and doulas.

It did remind me of the time i went to Sexpo in Darwin in a shed. LAME!

Is it time?

The past few weeks for me has been full of emotions and questions. Should I have a career change? Should we move? Where the heck am I going??
I was about an hour away from leaving my cushy Government job to take on a part time Admin role at the Childbirth Education Association, why, for a seachange mainly. To work in an area I have passion for, for many reasons really. Why didn't I? Well, for many more reason too. Main reasons would be circling around my perks and benefits of working for the NT Government.
After all that went down David and I considered a move, but to where? On the cards were either Perth or Hobart. David could get a job easily but would need to wait until March as that is his 2 years from Telstra, and it is a condition of his redundancy payout.

What about me then?
Well I'm excited to say I have applied to study a Bachelor of Midwifery (Direct Entry). This undergraduate degree starts up next year in 2012 and will be one of the first available externally. CDU is pretty big on distance education I think because of the remoteness of the NT. My only problem is I'm terrible at studying! I've attempted a Nursing degree TWICE and a double degree of Business/Science before I had Bethany. Good thing is I've completed two of the units already due to my Nursing degree studies.
I've spoken to the Course Co-ordinator and explained my situation and that I only want to do 1 unit per semester in the first year and she is okay with that.

So fingers crossed I get accepted...

Day 13 - markets!

We went to the Salamanca Markets this morning. Wow! How a market should be!

Brought these cute little shoes for Beth.

Then we went to the Cascade Brewery for a tour. Unfortunately once we arrived (and PAID!) they told me Beth couldnt go :( So the boys went and Elise and I went shopping in town.
Disappointed we couldn't go as it seemed quite good.

Tomorrow is our last day in Tassie. We've had a ball and only seen a small section. Oh well, more Tassie next year when we come back for the 2012 Homebirth Conference!!! YAY!

Day Nine - back in Canberra

What a great few days we've had. Sunday was my last day at the conference and Newcastle. Then we drove the 2hrs 15mins to my sister's house in Sydney.

The next day we went to the Zoo. Going to Taronga Zoo, you get there by catching a ferry which Beth enjoyed.

Today, Tuesday - we went to Ikea before driving back to Canberra. Pretty good drive actually.
Looking forward to chilling out in Tassie though as we have had a busy week!

Day 6 - conference day!

What an amazingly emotional day!

The opening of the conference started with aboriginal dancers, then a tear jerking montage of What Homebirth looks like in 2011. Beautiful photos of various home births, including a breech birth over the toilet.

Of course there were some midwifery rockstars speakers today with Robbie Davis-Floyd, Sarah Buckley and pioneer Ina May Gaskin.

Liz Wilkes from Midwives Australia gave an update on policy changes in Australia. It was really great to hear because as a Doula and someone living in the NT (where there are no IMs) I admit I wasn't up to date.
The final section of the day was Vbac Hour. Oh my goodness! I am so greatful that I found my Homebirth journey the first time around, I didn't need a scar to prove my body could do it. These powerful stories that were told by 3 mothers and a father were so emotional and breath taking. I dont think there was a dry eye in the house. Vbacs are an area I wish to explore further as a doula.
While we are here, we got to catch up with Alida and her 5 year old daughter Olivia. I haven't seen her since the time we caught up at the Sydney BDO 5 years ago when I was the first person she told that she thought she was preggers!

It was great to finally meet her daughter and catch up with Alida.

Bring on the final day, then we are off to visit Aunty Bex in Sydney.

Day 5 - Workshops

What a truly amazing day!
Today was my first conference day, it consisted of optional workshops.

First up I went to Renee's Pain Relief and Doulas where I learnt all about homeopathy, acupressure points and aromatherapy for pregnancy, labour and post partum. AWESOME.

Then I went onto the amazing Sarah Buckley's Hour After Birth. Seriously, Gentle Birth Gentle Mothering is one of my top 5 birth books. Sarah was an amazing speaker too. Not too fast, great tone and an interesting topic. To wrap up my day I then had Drumming with Jane Collings. I've been reading her blog and books for a couple of years now and it was fantastic to participate in a circle with other women. Really reinforces that I to attend her BirthWorker Workshops.

During the breaks, while over lunch or afternoon tea you could visit the trade tables.
A few businesses had their wares out including Sarah, Ina May and Jenny Blythe selling their books that you could get signed.
I brought some items for my doula bag, stickers and also a birthing doll. It's probably the most amazing handmade doll I have ever seen. It gives birth to a little baby and placenta. The Mumma doll has pubes, breasts and nipples, and comes with a little bag with a sling and blanket. Check out www.thegardenbaby.blogspot.com

Had a beautiful dinner last night at the Mecca Bar. So yummy and highly recommend it!

Also saw Kylie and lil Saf who are living down here after leaving Darwin a few months ago.

We drove from Canberra to Newcastle today. ROAD TRIP!
pretty good trip actually and Beth slept for 2.5hrs which was handy.
Arrived in Newcastle and went to check in, but the hotel didn't have my booking WTF!
After a bit of calling around we've got a room tonight at the Sebel (for free!) and it's mighty nice.
Bit nervous for tomorrow, but also excited!! Yay Homebirth Conference!

Day 1 - Canberra

Flew to Canberra today.

Fabulous flight with Qantas. It was strange the security personnel informed me that i might set of the metal detector with my earrings. Moron. Anyway, checked in and we were over our luggage allowance but got it waved since we have an infant.
Also, had the 3rd seat blocked so we had the whole row to ourselves.
Service was great, even got a meal for Bethany - totally didn't expect that!

Dad (Grandpa) has been looking forward to us coming, feel bad that we are only staying a few days now.

Really nice apartment in an awesome location. Look forward for exploring tomorrow : )

Yuna got a chicken. My poor Neema-chook has died...
Yuna dug a hole to the coop and two chickens escaped, only one was returned. I have been told that I should have waited 5 months before getting attached, but they so cute and I chose one that reminded me of Neema.

Long weekend

This long weekend we decided to do some gardening. Not doing things by halves we ordered 12 cubic meters of dirt/mulch to make up some garden beds.

I'm always inspired by my friends beautiful edible gardens so I actually started this project!

Our chickens are starting to get their feathers and get a little bigger. I decided to move them out into the yard to let them have more space. I do worry about the cold weather we are having at the moment (14c overnight!), but I figure they'll be alright.

Hopefully nothing eats them though...

Gluten and Dairy-free chickpea chocolate cake

My beautiful friend Jane doesn't eat dairy and my sister-in-law doesn't do gluten, so I made a cake that both could eat from a recipe I found on All Recipes.

Ingredients

1½ cups dark chocolate chips - I used the dairy free ones in the Health Food section

570g chick peas (about 2 tins, drained)

4 eggs

¾ cup (185g) white sugar

½ teaspoon baking powder

1 tablespoon icing sugar for dusting

Preparation method

1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees and grease pan
2. Melt choc chips in microwave
3. In a food processer, combine eggs and chickpeas until smooth. Then add in sugar and baking powder. Pulse to mix, then add in melted chocolate. Blend some more...
4. Bake in oven for 40mins and then dust with icing sugar.

The start of our chickeny journey has begun. I've wanted chickens (for eggs) for about the last 2 years. Now we have finally started!

Today we hit another milestone, one that most other babies reach at six months. Bethany moved from the safety of rear-facing to forward facing. It boggles the mind that so many parents flip the car seat around WAAY to early, thinking it will stop their child from being upset. It doesn't, all it does is increase the risks to the child if you are involved in a car accident. Bethany is almost 14 months, so we held out longer than any other Mum's I have known in real life. I've spoken and read online of others who have their 3 year old toddlers still rear-facing, in fact I believe it is in Sweden that rear facing is up to 2! Will find that link to confirm as not 100% on the country...
Anyway, we have a car seat that safely allows rear facing up to 12kgs, Beth is about 10kgs, but it just felt like the right time for us.

Easter is upon us: Bunnies, chocolate and public holidays. The real meanings of Easter or Eoster is lost in commercialism. I must admit that I was brought up with no real meaning of Easter, but I would like to change this for Bethany. In my Easter growing up, Dad would play jokes like putting cotton wool and betadine in a window and pretending that the Easter bunny got caught on the way out. We didn't have BUTT loads of chocolate, in fact I can remember my Mum making us Easter dresses and other gifts.
This year, mainly to do with my lack of thought, I didn't buy any chocolate. As a last minute thought I brought some hot cross buns while up at the shops and that is pretty much it.

I did however decide to decorate blown eggs. I used natural household dyes you would have in the cupboard, boiled on the stove for a few minutes. In my dye pot I had onion skins and since i didn't have very many, I added a little bit of coffee, pepper and fresh turmeric.
We went to Marlow's Lagoon for a walk with Yuna and I collected some leaves, placed it on the egg and covered the egg with a stocking tightly. Boiled for a few minutes, then washed under cool water.
The blue egg with the B on it, I rubbed a candle on it and dyed with blue food dye to see how it would turn out.

The dry is so close you can smell it! Today is lovely cool morning and I can't wait to get out there with Bethany. What I love the most about the dry, apart from the dragonflies of course, is sleeping without the aircon. We haven't had the aircon on all week and its GREAT!

So, let's see how my goals are going for 2011 since we are a quarter way through the year already...

Eating and running are going pretty good actually. Haven't been able to run lately due to our beloved Mountain Buggy pram tyre having MULTIPLE punctures!
I've finished my Doula course and Birth Art course, half way through the Gloria course AND I took on another course! I'm 70% completed in the Childbirth Educator course through CBE. I will be taking some Birth Prep classes at the CEA for Jane when she has leave.
And my garden. It got a bit trashed from all the rain but it is coming along nicely. We have some bananas growing at the moment so hopefully they will fruit/flower next year.

I've had a pretty tough couple of months with my Nan passing in January, I didn't really feel like myself or giving myself to anyone else either.
But I'm back to the blogging world. Super quick round up and then on to some photos : )

I've returned to work after getting back from my Nan's funeral. I'm only part time doing 3 days a week in my same job pre-pregnancy. I enjoy the work and it suits me for this time in my life, I seriously could do the job with my eyes closed. David is also working part time to care for Bethany. We are so lucky that we can avoid the need to have her in full time care. Bethany is still to little and we had a child for us, not for someone else to raise her!
I also attended my first birth as a doula, and currently waiting for my 2nd to go into labour, the first was an induction for medical reasons. This lovely mother needed to have a drug free birth due to being allergic to pethidine and epidurals, she had a lovely pain relief free birth - not even resorting to gas.
I will also be taking over the Birth Prep classes with the CEA next month. SO terrified! I'm not a great public speaker but I can see this being a great opportunity for me, plus I'm also finished my Childbirth Educator diploma.
Darwin also had a cyclone too! TC Carlos formed over land which was quite crazy, heaps of rain and wind. It was only a cat 1 but because we had experienced heaps of rain beforehand the land was soft and couldn't withstand the wind pressure with huge mahoganies falling with some damage.

Bethany has turned 1! I cannot believe my little squishy newborn is now a little girl! We just had a simple day at our house and then on the weekend invited a few friends over with their children, nothing to large as I certainly can't handle crowds and mass children. For Bethany's first "cake" we had a fruit cake, it was definitely a hit.

I've also been sewing too. I made this cute little vest and some awesome pants. The pants are great for cloth butts and I brought the pattern online from Made by Rae
I really enjoy sewing but I just don't have the time anymore. Bethany needs to have attention or even when she is sleeping I need to clean the house or SOMETHING needs to be done!

I really need to sort out "me" time. I go jogging a couple of days a week, but I'm not alone - I do have Beth with me. Will have to think a bit more on my time management...

I cannot believe how so much has changed in a little over week.

On Wednesday 12th January, my Nan had a stroke which left her vision pretty much gone, her swallow reflex gone, lack of speech and weakness.
My Uncle did the ring around and I spoke to Dave (thank goodness he was home when I got the phone call from my sister!) and I made the decision to go see her asap. I decided to fly out at 7am the very next morning, pretty much the next flight available. I'm so glad I booked my Mum's flight too and she didn't wait until Friday.

Goobs picked us up from the airport and took us straight away, he was concerned she wouldn't even be there, it was that grave. I cried so hard when I saw her, this wasn't what I expected. It was awful, this wouldn't be what she wanted. We spoke to her, hoping she heard us. I sat on her bed with Bethany and she turned and cupped my face and tried to speak to me. Bethany cried and just how she was a few months earlier, Nan clapped her hands and told her off (jesting), she knew we were there. I'm so glad.

My sister was flying in that night, she too went straight into Nan. Unfortunately Nan's pain medication had been increased so she was pretty much not responsive.
How quickly she had been taken from us.
Sarah (my cousin) and Maureen (family friend of 40 odd years) told me that earlier in the morning Nan was speaking with them, making fun of the staff - as she does, but her time was coming.
Bec and I went and stayed with Nan for a while on Friday, then needed a break. Funeral preparations were being made as it was assumed she wouldn't survive the weekend.
At about 6pm, my Mum was with her when she passed. Mum told her to not hang around for us, we loved her and it was time for her to go see her Mother and Mam, her Father who she loved so much and spoke so fondly of, her other siblings and their dog Timmy. WTF Mum, you never had a dog Timmy!

My Nan was the best Nan you could have asked for, the best friend. I saw how she spoke and treated her friends and she was very loyal.

We love and miss you Nan xx

A national disaster is unfolding in the sunny state of Queensland. Extreme flooding doesn't even cut it with 75% of the state flooded. It is the size of Germany and France combined.
Queensland is a major grower of Australian fruit and vegetables, so prices are rising and stock depleting.
Currently 9 people have died and 59 people still missing when an inland tsunami hit without warning and rip through SE Queensland.

Not only have I donated but 100% of my commissions I receive from orders of Baby Beehinds I get, I will be donating to the flood appeal.

First week in wrap up

Today was the final day of week two in the Couch to 5km, did pretty well I might add. Even wore out Beth...

My week of non dairy, caffeine, sugar and facebook went pretty good actually. I only had 2 bits of dairy this week. One was when we went out to dinner to Hoggies on Thursday with Gary and I had a scoop of ice cream and the other is when I didn't even think about it and had strawberries and cream. Well I had to eat the cream, it was going to go off and we can't have waste can we...
Caffeine, no so hard. I only occasionally feel like a coffee (esp when I was up at 4.30am on Thursday!) but I just have a roobios instead. Sugar, wasn't as hard as I thought. I just steered clear of chocolate and OJ, as they are my soft spots.
Oh and facebook. I only posted something last night (a picture actually) and my Nike+ automatically posts to my wall from my runs. Other than that - pretty easy : )

Maybe I'll try to Project 365...

People will often say that their whole lives flashed before their eyes after they experienced a traumatic event. Perhaps it’s a bit morbid, but we think that sounds pretty incredible.

When Taylor McKnight started taking a photo a day on January 1st, 2004, he never imagined the project would not only serve as a way to remember a year, but also help him understand what was important to him in his life.

Whether it was his relationships, his career, or his fashion sense, recording a photo a day for a whole year left him with a rich visual history of his life. And it made him a better photographer to boot!

If anything, it will make me blog more!

Vegan Muffins

I've been meaning to post this recipe for AGES. Dairy free vegan sultana and carrot muffins from my sister, Bex. These are the friggin BOMB!

Carrot and Sultana Muffins, taken from Vegan With a Vengeance.
The Boi loves these so much (now I've gotten the recipe figured). The are low fat (without the icing), low sugar but still sweet and moist. Also really easy to make.

Muffins (makes 12):
1/2 cup of sultanas, soaking in hot water
1 ½ cup of plain flour
2 tsp of Baking Powder
½ tsp of Bi-carb
½ tsp of cinnamon
½ tsp of nutmeg
4 tabs of sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup (250ml) of soy milk
1 tsp vanilla
4 tabs of vegie oil
3 grated carrots

Icing:
½ cup of icing sugar
3-4 tabs of lemon juice
3-4 tabs of nuttlex/margarine

Heat oven to 200C, grease muffin tin.

Sift dry ingredients (flour, spices, bi-carb, baking powder) and mix in salt and sugar. Make a well in the centre, and pour in liquids. Mix til barely combined. Add the carrots, mix a bit more. Drain the sultanas, mix them in too.
Spoon into muffin tins (fill ¾ full) and bake for 20-25 min, until a skewer comes out clean.
Cool on a rack.
Mix icing sugar and nuttlex together and add lemon juice til a stiff consistency is gotten – ice cupcakes. Yum!

Another year, another set of goals

So another year has rolled around, boy last year flew by!

On New Year's Day we planted Bethany's placenta under a lemon tree we brought her. Jane, Ella and my folks came to have morning tea with us and it was just lovely.

I have been thinking of the things I would like to achieve this year and I've come up with the following so far:

Less consumerism! Now that Dave and I will be both part time to keep Beth out of childcare we won't have the spare cash like we used to. I'm going to attempt to stick to my shopping list, no impulse buys and to save for things instead of putting it on the credit card...
Eat better. Less packet shit and more whole foods.
Finish the Couch to 5km run. I've finished week 1 and feeling great! I would really like to go and participate in the City to Surf again this year and get a good time : )
Thanks to Kris for inspiration (she ran 1000kms in 2010), I'm setting myself a goal to run 750kms. Thats 14.5kms a week. I think it's achievable without making it too easy or out of my reach.
Finish the various studies/courses I've started. My Doula course is so close to being finished, I can see it! I'll hopefully be finished by the end of next month. I have also started an Teaching Art Class with Birthing From Within, this starts at the end of the week and will be reimbursed through the CEA once I've finished as I will be running classes for them, and my final workshop I've enrolled in for the time being is Midwifery 101 with Gloria Lemay. Things it will cover are;

Female Pelvis-anatomy and physiology
Medical Terminology
Prenatal Clinic visit
Palpation, Blood pressure
Rh negative blood type
Fetal circulation
Pregnancy Induced Hypertension

I hope to have our garden a bit more sorted. More fruit and veg, and less random spikey plants that Beth could poke herself on.

At this point, I think that is it. I need to detox this week to refresh myself before returning to work. I think I might start tomorrow. 5 days of no facebook posting (except photos of Bethany), no caffine, no added sugars - natural sugars found in fruits etc ok, and I will really try to have no dairy. Will see how I go, only for 5 days...

Nappy Wallet

Last night Beth fell asleep on David's chest. I was at a loss! What to do with my "free time"?

I came across Mangolime's nappy wallet. I thought, I could make one of those. I really do love Mangolime's nappies btw, I own 3! Anyway, a few weeks ago David ripped his favourite jeans in a way that they could not be saved. I decided to upcycle the material and attempt to make my own wallet.

I don't think it turned out too badly. I don't know if I will actually use it, but it might be good to keep it in the glove box for spare nappies. In the photo you can also just see my bamboo velour wipes I've made. I'm very proud of those!

Baby Pants

I quickly whipped up some easy as baby pants yesterday while B was sleeping. I got the instructions from a very awesome site

Also yesterday went to Spotlight to spend a $10 voucher I got from being a VIP member and they were having a MASSIVE sale. Spotlight had tables with fabric discounted to $2-$6/m, then as I was looking through it a staff member came by and said any fabric with an orange label is a further half price! WOOT! About 95% of the fabric on the tables had the orange labels, very awesome.
I went and got about a metre of different fabrics as that's a great length for Beth. So I got $70 worth of fabrics for only $25. SCORE

More sewing

Had a pretty crapy day today, unsure why. But with a super cute baby I decided to attempt to add a frill on to her long singlet we got on clearance from Target the other day. A bargain at $3 for an organic cotton singlet.

I had some scrap Xmas fabric I brought the other day for my tree bunting and just sewed it on the bottom and randomly scrunched it up a bit as I sewed, since I have no idea how I am meant to do a frill!
Then I ironed some interfacing on the back of the tree and sewed it roughly in the middle of her 'dress'.
DONE!

Cloth wipes

I have been using facewashers as bum wipes for Bethany for a little while now. I had been given HEAPS of disposable wipes at my baby shower which was lovely, but now I have made the switch permanently. The bamboo velour arrived and I went and brought soft flannelette material from Spotlight. The stripy material in the photo as well as a purple/black material which I haven't used yet.
My bloody overlocker is playing up so I had to do this the hard way and sew it, turn it the right way - instead of just overlocking the edges. Hopefully I will get it fixed before I finish them all!
These ones I have made are a tad smaller than I should have made them, but are great for her face now we are eating food, and really - who cares if I use 2 wipes instead of 1, they just go in the wash anyway...

I have also made up my own 'wipe solution' even though water is good too :) I just use chamomile tea! I read it on a blog somewhere and I think it adds an extra loveliness to a messy job. Here is some more ideas too.

Parcels!

I love parcels! Received two today.
My order from EcoToys. I ordered some wooden toys for Xmas presents for friends, a lovely wooden teether rattle which Bethany is nom'ing on in the photo and a rainstick, which is pretty cool and makes noise for her, but that's for Xmas!

I also ordered some bamboo velour from Tiny Toosh, I'm going to be making my own wipes. I got sent 3 lovely itti bitti velour wipes when I placed my last order and just love them!

Now to get sewing...

Our new Boba Carrier

To celebrate International Babywearing Week I ordered a new ssc for David, Boba Carrier from The Portable Baby.
I've got a Beco Butterfly that is borrow from a friend, I've offered to buy it off her as I really like the Beco. David can never be bothered altering the strap lengths so this is the main reason for the new carrier, also this one can carry 5-6 year olds!

I also have a close baby carrier which is kind of like a hug a bub, it is a thicker jersey material so it does get a bit warm here in Darwin.

When and if I do get another carrier, it would probably be a Beco of my own or a lovely maya ring sling.
I enjoyed using the ring sling when Beth was really little, but I couldn't use it for long periods as it hurt my shoulders.

Well, that's the end of Babywearing Week now it's Reusable Nappy Week.

Two years ago if someone had told me about cloth menstrual pads, I would have thought "hmmm,... okay, but not for me".
Speaking to other Mums and reading on JB has opened my eyes to a new sanitary options. tbh, I never even heard of menstrual cups before I got pregnant, I didn't know there were options.
I have brought a lunette and have been told by users that it is great. I haven't personally tried it yet as I'm still breastfeeding Bethany and don't have to have that hassle yet.

Another option is cloth pads. A friend traveled overseas last year and brought up cloth pads. She had to think how many potential bleeds she would have, since she was trekking and not near a shop she had to pack enough products for her holiday. Another woman in her group had cloth pads and spoke to her about it, it made sense. Using cloth nappies for Bethany has been easy. I was very passionate on this and would not let a plastic sposie touch her skin, which it hasn't, so why am I using plastic crap for me? So as well as a lunette, I brought a trial pack from Scarlet Eve during the Cloth Nappy Hunt to see how I go.
Not only will I be doing my little bit for the environment, but since we will be on a tight budget next year as I will be returning to work part time and David will be part time to keep Bethany out of day care, I will be saving some cash too. It's scary to think of the money potentially wasted on sanitary products!

So, even though I'm not going to start knitting my own tampons or anything, I just wanted to share with others that there are other greener options.

Pram Liner

I have no idea WHY I wanted to make a pram liner for my Mountain Buggy but I needed to!
I kind of used this tut from floating world but really all I did was use a garbage bag to find out how big to make it, next time I will do curved corners but this was just a template really. In side is just 2 layers of an old beach towel, but when I make a proper one I will use bamboo batting from Spotlight.

My button hole thingame on my machine is weird, so I just diy button holes for the straps and I think it turned out okay for someone who has never dealt with bias binding and can only pretty much do straight stitch!

Recent sewing projects

The last few days I've been having craft'a'noons. I'm not the greatest sew'er but getting better and more adventurous.
I have a mate who has 3 young children, she uses cloth nappies and has no wetbag! I thought I'd attempt to make one so she didn't have to continue using a plastic bag. I googled DIY wetbag and got some hints and tips. I decided to just make a lined drawstring bag using an IKEA shower curtain I had spare for the lining.

Nothing to fancy as it was only my first attempt but it was SO easy, I'm going to be making these again.

Last night I decided to make a hooded towel for Bethany. It was all I wanted and we have one already but it is pretty crapy and boring white. Handy google lead me to this fantastic tutorial at Make and Take, I wont bother with directions here cos it is so clear and easy. But here is my very first effort!

Teddy Bear's Picnic

Today was the Teddy Bear's Picnic which is apart of the Darwin Festival.

The Darwin Homebirth Group had a stall selling organic fruit kebabs. David, with a hangover, came with me to help out Sarah and Lauren to set up at 7am, tad early, but it was a great day and loads of people came by.

Beth did extremely well, even missing her mid morning nap.

Currently David and I are sitting for Lori and Dan while they are watching Tex Perkins' Johnny Cash. Rosey was in bed, so it isn't a major deal, but it's been a long day and it will be nice to get to bed.

Wow! Been super busy of late.
I had my first client meeting/interview over the weekend for my doula services. I thought it went pretty good and she got back to me today. I'm hired! Awesome!
I've done most of my exams and have averaged so far 90%. I've ordered simple business cards, I just wish I could think of a darn name for my business...
Today Sarah and I cleaned out the Homebirth storage cage at the CEA. Boy was there some crap in there. We have the Teddy Bear's Picnic on this Sunday so we had to look for our banners and such.

Final week

I have really enjoyed being down in Geelong with Nan. Bethany and I head back next week but we have a few things to do this week. My uncle and cousin are taking us out to Colac tomorrow, Thursday we are off to my cousin's cafe/restuarant where he is an apprentice, Friday off for dinner and then Saturday my beloved arrives!
Sunday we are off to see my gorgeous cousin Cherie and her family.

On my random journey through the Geelong CBD I came across a few interesting shops. A tea leaf shop as well as a shop for David, Popcultcha. Heaps of geek, gamer and tv stuff - very cool.
Such as this Dr Who cookie jar, not as awesome as the Darlek cookie jar we brought Daryl for Xmas from Melbourne...

Currently in Geelong helping out with the care of my Nan. She isn't an invalid or anything, she just needs help with the house work, remindering her to take her medications and more importantly to EAT! She hadn't eaten any solids for 2 days because she doesn't get hungry.
My delightful Nan is 79 and has cancer, she has been given only a few months to live and is in horrible pain.
She has 3 children, Mal is the oldest who lives close by, then there is my mother who lives in Darwin and her youngest, Scott, who lives in Adelaide.
Mal takes care of Nan, taking her to her medical appointments, checking on her 2-3 times a day etc
It really has made me think of family and how important it is. Not to go and have kids to ensure I'll get looked after when I get old. I keep in touch with my sister and I know we would and WILL look after one another if the time comes, but what about those people out there who have no one? No family or friends?

I'm glad to be here and helping my Nan the best I can. So please look after your family (chosen family or blood family) and more importantly - keep in touch!

EC - the natural infant hygiene

I've been doing a lot of research into EC, Natural Infant Hygiene, Nappy Free and other various names, basically it is about COMMUNICATION with your child and not about early potty training.
There is heaps online and a few books available too.

I've been watching Beth's cues and have had a few successes. It is so much easier with a potty which I picked up from ikea.

Our plan is to keep going and see how we go. I have heard from others that it is great and works. I figure every pee/poo caught is a nappy I don't have to wash!

Mornings, family time

Most families have their togetherness time at dinner. I'm not in the mood to chat and relax at the end of the day, I want to eat, bath Bethany and get some sleep.
Lately we have started to walk in the mornings and then enjoy our coffee and breakfast. I've been making oats with a nut & fruit crumble to go on top with honey and banana. Very yum!

Justine was able to express a little so I could have a go at feeding Bethany. She spewed a bit afterwards so she then had to go back on the boob.
